UniBurma Font and Keyboard Packages
Submitted by haalaaluu on Wed, 2005-10-12 23:57.basically, i stopped uniburma distro trunk around 2005 bec i hope it is not good to be distributed widely.. but now some friends keep being asked why ur font didnt work properly or ask me whether they can use uniburma in something serious manner, etc...actually, by some technical point, i personally dont recommend it to use it and any type of partial unicode format fonts. since __things__ are still lagging in official burmese unicode support in most cases, i have no choice, to go/release up with this partial solution... i do have nice and working uniburma like wut other does.

Current Myanmar Unicode Fonts and Compatibility
Submitted by haalaaluu on Mon, 2005-10-24 03:40. DiscussionThis article now left as archived purpose, written on 2005-10-24 03:40:25 +0800. The latest and the more appropriate version referred to http://www.mmlt.org/portal/myanmar-unicode-public-awareness
There are fonts called PonNya_Web(mamboforge), MyaZedi(earlier version from myazedi.com/etrademyanmar.com), UniBurma(from this project), bit(burmait.net), Mandalay(mahamunipagoda.org.mm) spread through on net as Myanmar unicode font. Perhaps, there can be more which i didn't notice. Please take note that all of above fonts are not actual unicode font. I assumed all these as "partial unicode fonts". So, if you are seeking Myanmar unicode font for translation, be aware about this.
Currently, the fonts which support Myanmar Unicode(both rendering algorithm and glyph map) are

Seven Additional Burmese and Minority on WG2 UCS proposals
Submitted by haalaaluu on Sun, 2006-04-09 09:24. GeneralMajor Related Page : WG2 Document Frontpage
Seven Additional Burmese Characters
On 2006-03-07, there is a working group proposed to add new seven characters to UCS. The following is the proposed document.
Major documents:
n3043.pdf
While favour to rendering, the complex work and difficulty of implementing font, i would agree this proposal as a UniMM-UniBurma project. Especially, ASAT(killer) and Tall AA. Using U+1039(as killer, 4.1) as a toggle is totally pain because it could happen to occur frequently in every Burmese writing. This effected a lot on font implementation. ASAT should have its codepoint as it does have its potential on writing regardless of rendering. There are another six cases and all would be helped on implementing Burmese font and the way of proper rendering, not only to computing(programming, rendering) but also for linguistical accept(grammar, the way we have taught). Current stable version 4.1 is perfect for less codepoint and rendering but UniMM couldn't go far yet! Implementing State Machine and Opentype Table is totally mess.. Though not documented on this proposal, i would support this proposal as among one of the Myanmar font implementors.
Chapter 1

No Linguistical | No Algorithm
You can't find any Linguistical nor Algorithm resources here. Perhaps, you have to follow the right path for this. UniBurma | UniMM mainly contributed the Opensource Computer Font and Keyboard implementation project. UniBurma | UniMM project make sure that there were Opensource Myanmar unicode Font and Keyboard available. In here, we mentioned that Opensource, not just free font and keyboard. The source which you can use not only free but also reproducing from scratch as of no warranty support for your development. You have to familiar with it.
Chapter 2
Submitted by haalaaluu on Sun, 2006-05-07 22:06.Chapter 2 | Implementation Path
Before..
As of written in CH1, we are going to implement the digital font. Make sure yourself to be clear that Not Encoding or Linguistical sound like __creating new universal encoding system*__ nor __creating new 21st century beautiful myanmar character(s) you've never seen before*__. If you wanted to do those, please go to respective "Proper Organizations" mentioned in CH1 and claim your invention(s). At this point, we already have encoding algorithm and myanmar characters which our major role to implement the computer digital font. We have to implement what of standard given by those systems accordingly.
Opentype Table
Submitted by haalaaluu on Mon, 2006-05-08 07:13.For OTL Feature Tags, we still do not have official Burmese OpenType Specification like Khmer OpenType Specification. This OTL is still under developing though it is well-tested and working. Please read Solution Chapter 3 for implementation approach.
This is still Beta and pending for vowel, context shaping and kinzi. You might want to try SVN trunk for lastest source.
Chapter 3
Submitted by haalaaluu on Mon, 2006-05-08 22:47.Chapter 3 | Journey With Opentype
A.Opentype
Opentype always refer to Microsoft and Adobe joint development. But I would ping to Microsoft Opentype spec webpage for most references. You should also check out Adobe Opentype page. Here, i would pick out the fundamental requirement and opentype which tie to burmese script on UniMM.
Opentype Feature tags specification for Burmese is not officially released either Microsoft or Adobe yet.
X-Keyboard Mapping
Submitted by haalaaluu on Mon, 2006-05-08 23:21.(Not applicable to UniMM font and it's still under development. But UniMM will base on UniBurma.)
You must have a root privilege to do the following task.
Every command instructions will be separated by pressing enter.
From terminal,
# tar -xzvf UniBurma_Keyboard-Beta.tar.gz
# ls
(check whether you can find UniBurma_Keyboard-Beta, if yes, continue else path to
download/unpack directory accordingly and continue.)
# sudo username
# cp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/mm /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/mm_org
# cp /root/UniBurma_Keyboard-Beta/pc/mm /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/
# cp: overwrite '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/mm'? yes
# cp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/mm /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/mm_org
# cp /root/UniBurma_Keyboard-Beta/mm /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/
# cp: overwrite '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/mm'? yes
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart the X or just simply restart your machine.
Note: /root/UniBurma_Keyboard-Beta is where you downloaded and unpacked the UniBurma Keyboard folder.
Please change it accordingly to your unpacked directory.
To enable keyboard indicator in Gnome, Desktop > Preferences > Keyboard
At the keyboard preferences, goto layout tab, press the add button.
Scroll down to find "Burmese" and press ok.
Now goto taskbar panel(bottom of your desktop), right click on it and
select the "Add to Panel".
At the add to panel dialog, scroll down and find "Keyboard Indicator" and add it.
Now if you want to switch to Myanmar(Burmese) keyboard, just click on "USA" icon and
it will change to "Mmr" which stand for Myanmar.
To type in Myanmar, open up Openoffice writer/word and switch to Myanmar Keyboard by clicking
on indicator and switch to UniBurma Font accordingly.
Please refer to keylayout image under /root/UniBurma_Keyboard-Beta.
It is the same instruction and manner to KDE, CDE and Xfce also. As long as, Linux/Unix is using X.org
or X11R6. For the Unix and Solaris(JDE), just follow up the directory accordingly.
It is not complete yet and i will try to finish the complete kb as soon as possiable. According to
keylayout image, you can test the key alone and shift which is most essential usage in today Myanmar
language.
